Look into room 207 and say hello to the postman

Today we visit the postman in room 207 at the hotel. So what is a postilion you might ask? Well, it was a postal clerk who supervised the general mail aisle.

Staffanstorp has a lot of exciting history behind it:

Sweden's only train robbery occurred right here in Staffanstorp on March 18, 1907.

Two men got on board wearing plum tops and dark suits and attacked the postman Johannes Almén, who was sorting valuable mail. The train had picked up both valuables and cash registers at each stop along the way, so there was quite a bit to pick up.

This is what a mail van could look like

The masked men hit the postilion with a stone but he resisted strongly so one of the robbers, Axel Fors, opened fire and hit him with three shots in the head.

The robbers took SEK 5,360 with them when they left the train in motion but – missed a change of SEK 15,000!! That's how it can go…

The poor postman had to go on by train to the hospital in Malmö, where it was found that he had three bullets in his head. Miraculously, he survived.

The bullets were left in the head and when Johannes Almén died in 1949, the bullets were taken out and can now be viewed at the Postal Museum in Stockholm.

And how did the robbers do then? Well, they got their punishment and Axel Fors wrote a contrite letter to Almén in 1910 where he apologized for everything he had done.
